| More and more these days, people
are talking about the importance of living “green”,
living more lightly on the land in “sustainable”
communities. Living green means living richer and better
lives by making better choices. It means living and
building in ways that enhance our lives while not limiting
future generations from being able to do the same. People
thrive in homes and communities sustained by a healthy
connection to the land: a connection between the natural
and built environments. By making better choices, our
lives can become richer.
With this in mind, Madison has made a commitment to
move our projects and company in the direction of sustainability.
We are working to reduce our impact and increase profitability
through focus on projects that are socially, fiscally,
and environmentally responsible.
Specifically, we are working with the world's foremost
professionals on solutions that will determine the landscape
and future of development. In addition to being a member
company of U.S. Green Building Council, we work closely
with LEED® Accredited Professionals and local chapter
heads on our projects.
We also collaborate with organizations including the
National Resources Defense Council, Environmental Defense,
and Ceres.
Internally, our company is also doing what we can to
mitigate our overall carbon footprint by adopting corporate-wide
policies including recycling programs, increasing the
energy efficiency of our operations, and monetary incentives
for employees who drive hybrid vehicles.
Sustainable development is not some exotic new way
of building, but rather a more conscious and holistic
method of thinking through the building process, making
all elements of each project work together to create
a “high performance” building and a better
living experience.
